  • Freelancers now have a variety of platforms to operate sidegigs–from Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, Taskrabbit, Fiverr, etc that provide billing and payment protections.
  • These types of platforms make it easier to offer a service and get paid in real-time.
  • If not using a platform like the above, be wary of clients who refuse to sign an agreement or contract (which acts much like a trial close).
  • Haggling over rates or becoming aggressive in discussing rates could be an indicator of problems to come.
  • Using dismissive language or undervaluing your work is a red flag as well. A client is hiring you as a specialist and should be willing to pay a fair price.
  • Be wary of clients that aren’t responsive to emails, phone calls, etc. This again could be a sign of wasting your time.
  • Not being respectful of your time is an indicator–whether they nitpick or are constantly calling you complaining. They need to respect your time and efforts and not badger you.
  • They won’t pay online. Most business use Paypal, Square, etc for payments and in today’s digital age are becoming a normal method of payments. Explaining up front how to be paid is crucial that they understand and expect this.
  • They demand upfront delivery before they pay. This can be tricky as many freelance workers need to balance trusting the client with the realities of getting paid. Agree to provide part of your work upfront with the balance of it when full payment is received. Again, this is something that needs to be discussed upfront to get as much in writing as possible.
  • Again, using an established platform like Fiverr, etc that manages services, payments and ratings is a great way to prevent client abuse. 
  • Offering a bonus or incentive for advance payment is always appreciated by clients.
